Slava Ukraini - Heroyam Slava
„Glory to Ukraine - Glory to the heroes“. This exclamation became a national salute in Ukraine during the Euromaidan Revolution in 2013/14.
About one hundred people lost their lives at Independence Square in Kyiv during the clashes. They were honoured as the „heavenly hundred“, when the civil unrest came to its temporary end. Among the demonstrators were students and apolitical people, peacefully protesting by calling for democracy, freedom and better economical circumstances, besides radical supporters of the right-wing Svoboda party, who fought for national interests.
They were united by the aim to overthrow Viktor Yanukovych’s government and lead their country’s future in a different direction.
The phrase “Slava Ukraini!” first appeared in several military formations during the Ukrainian War of Independence in 1917–21 and later on was forbidden in the Soviet Union. During the Euromaidan Revolution it had its resurgence.
